The Cinema Excelsior team begins its journey through the Marvel canon with 1986's Howard the Duck, arguably the worst comic book film ever made and the first Marvel feature to be released in theaters. Produced by George Lucas and starring Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, and Jeffrey Jones, it is an utterly attrocius combination of mid-eighties pop cliches and Lovecraftian horror. Make no mistake: this film earned its negligible reputation.
Cinema Excelsior is a podcast dedicated to analyzing and understanding the films of Marvel Comics. Our roundtable of film PhDs, screenwriters, and comic book nerds tries to understand what makes each film succeed or fail as an adaptation, a commercial enterprise, and a piece of art.
